Keeping Chickens

The raising and keeping of chickens and their associated structures on a non-commercial basis in a Residential 1 (R1) or in a Rural (RD) District is a Principal Permitted use with an approved zoning certificate.

Certain conditions are also required to ensure that the raising and keeping of chickens are conducted in a way to avoid conflicts with neighboring properties and to not adversely affect the safety and general welfare of the citizens of the Village.

Do I need a permit to have chickens in the Village?

Yes, a permit is required to keep chickens. The permit for backyard chickens falls under a zoning certificate which you can obtain online then submit to the Village Administrator.

Are roosters allowed?

No, only hens are permitted. No person shall keep a rooster.

How many hens are allowed?

No more than ten (10) Hens are permitted on any one (1) property.

Can I keep chickens in my front yard?

No, chickens and chicken coops must be located in the rear yard and must conform to all setback requirements for Accessary Buildings.

Are chicken coops or pens required to keep chickens?

Yes, chickens shall be confined within a secure outdoor enclosed area to prevent entry by predators or the escape of chickens which shall include a covered and ventilated chicken coop.

Can I let my chickens free roam?

No chicken shall be permitted to roam outside the coop or enclosed area.
