When I call 9-1-1 for emergency assistance, who answers the phone?

Dispatchers at the Athens County 9-1-1 Center answer the 9-1-1 phone. Once the dispatcher classifies the call, police, fire, or paramedic personnel is dispatched.

Does the police department issue snow emergency levels during inclement weather?

No. State law provides that In Ohio, the county sheriff is the authority who determines snow emergency levels for their respective county. Click on the Sheriff’s Facebook link above for more.

Does the police department have information about school closings during inclement weather?

No. The police department does not make the decision concerning a school closing, and the superintendent does not advise us when such an event occurs. We suggest you listen to a local radio or television station or call the school in question.

What do I do in case of an automobile accident?

Ohio law requires all drivers to stop immediately after an accident and exchange information with the other party(s). The following is the information that you should exchange with the other party(s):

  • Name and address
  • Driver’s license number
  • Vehicle make, model, color, and license plate number
  • Insurance company and agent
  • Date, time, location, witnesses, and any injuries

If you wish to file an accident report, call the police.

If the vehicles are drivable, move the cars off the roadway to prevent the occurrence of another accident.

Where do I go to pay a traffic fine?

Traffic fines for citations issued by an Albany Police officer may be paid at Village Hall between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm, Monday – Thursday (Noon on Friday) any day prior to the Mayor’s court date listed on your ticket. Fines may be paid by cash or check with appropriate identification.

How long will it take to get a police report?

Every report must be completed and thoroughly reviewed before it is available for public release.  The approval process generally takes one to two days, however it may take longer depending on scheduling.  All requests for reports will be completed as promptly as possible.

How do I find if someone is in jail?

You can check the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail website. The Albany Police Department does not hold anyone within the Village.  

School Bus Safety

When a school bus is stopped on a roadway to pick up or drop off passengers, the following regulations apply to other drivers on the roadway:

  • If the bus is stopped on a street or road which has fewer than four lanes, all traffic approaching the bus from either direction must stop at least 10 feet from the front or rear of the bus and remain stopped until the bus begins to move or the bus driver signals motorists to proceed.
  • If the bus is stopped on a street or road which has four or more lanes, only traffic proceeding in the same direction as the bus must stop.

The Albany, Ohio Police Department is a part-time, accredited agency funded through two seperate property tax levies on properties within the Village. Our Police Department works in conjunction with the Athens County Sheriff’s Department. Our officers are Ohio Peace Officer certified and are continually training to maintain a high degree of preparedness. All calls for service are dispatched through the Athens County 911 System.
